Air Filtration

Who doesn’t like to breathe clean air in his or her own house? Everyone knows that having a clean home also means having clean air to breathe inside your house. The air filter is responsible for maintaining the heating and air conditioning system’s coils and keeping the heat exchanger clean.

The air filter of your house should be changed regularly. In choosing an air filter, you need to consider how frequently you must change or clean it. Every unique furnace air filter has different cleaning intervals.

Another thing you must consider in choosing an air filter is its material and style. The performance of the unit is dependent on the size and density of the used material in making the unit. The quantity and size of the dust or materials being filtered also affect the overall performance of an air filter.

There are also some high end filters with pleats that were charged electro-statically to attract and keep in place other minute particles. To select the appropriate size and shape of the air filter to be used, you can ask a professional what is best for the size of your home.

The Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) must also be considered in choosing a furnace air filter. The indicated MERV of the unit will be the basis of its capacity to filter and hold particles of sizes 3 microns to 10 microns.
MERV Min. particle size Typical controlled contaminant [2] Typical Application [2]
17–20[3] < 0.3 microns Virus, carbon dust, sea salt, smoke Electronics & pharmaceutical manufacturing cleanroom
13–16 0.3–1.0 microns Bacteria, droplet nuclei (sneeze), cooking oil, most smoke and insecticide dust, most face powder, most paint pigments hospital & general surgery
9–12 1.0–3.0 microns Legionella, Humidifier dust, Lead dust, Milled flour, Auto emission particulates, Nebulizer droplets Superior residential, better commercial, hospital laboratories
5–8 3.0–10.0 microns Mold, spores, dust mite debris, cat and dog dander, hair spray, fabric protector, dusting aids, pudding mix Better residential, general commercial, industrial workspaces
1–4 > 10.0 microns Pollen, dust mites, cockroach debris, sanding dust, spray paint dust, textile fibers, carpet fibers Residential window AC units

Protect your family from the unhealthy and damaging effects of over-dry air such as a dry nose, cracked or itchy skin, sore throats, aggravated allergy, and asthma symptoms. Dry air can also have affects on your home. Static electricicty buildup, chipping paint and plaster, splitting or cracked wood floors trim and molding.

If any of this sounds familiar, it may be the humidity levels in your home.  Why go through another season with these problems when there is a solution—an Aprilaire Whole-Home Humidifier. Turning your temperature up in the wintertime will keep you warm but won’t increase your home’s humidity level. Daily activities such as showering, cooking and doing laundry don’t produce enough moisture to keep your home’s air from being too dry.

According to medical experts, many viruses thrive in low humidity increasing the likelihood of catching colds, flu and upper respiratory ailments. The American Society of Otolaryngology even reports that it is important to prevent an overly dry environment because it makes people more susceptible to infection.

A Whole-Home Humidifier from Aprilaire, installed by Thompson's Comfort Connection, will deliver the perfect amount of moisture to your air making you feel more comfortable at lower thermostat settings. In fact, the EPA states that you can save up to 4% on your heating bill for every degree you lower your thermostat! Increase your family’s level of comfort and protect your valuable furnishings by adding just the right amount of moisture with an Aprilaire Whole-House Humidifier.
