How to Install Your Window Air Conditioning Unit

There are certain homes or buildings where additional cooling may be needed for particular rooms or areas, and one option in these cases is the installation of a window air conditioning unit. How do you install a window air conditioning unit? The steps tend to be simple enough for most people as long as they’ve done the proper planning and preparation.

At Thompson’s Comfort Connection, we’re here to offer a wide range of air conditioning installation and AC repair services to clients around Sandy, Midvale, Draper, Cottonwood Heights, Riverton and nearby areas. Here are some basic tips from our professionals on whether you need a window AC unit, finding the right unit, and simple installation steps to follow.

Do You Need a Window AC Unit?

The first step to installing a window air conditioning unit is determining if it’s necessary for your space. Window units are ideal for smaller spaces or specific rooms that require extra cooling, such as a home office or bedroom. If you have central air conditioning but want additional cooling in certain areas, a window unit can be a cost-effective option.

However, there may be some drawbacks to consider. Window units can be bulky and take up window space, limiting natural light and views. They also tend to be less energy-efficient than central air conditioning systems.

Choosing the Right Unit

Once you’ve decided on a window unit, it’s important to choose the right size for your space. Measure the width and height of your window opening before purchasing a unit – it’s important that the unit fits snugly into the window without any gaps for optimal efficiency.

You’ll also want to pay attention to the British Thermal Units (BTUs) when choosing a unit. BTUs measure the cooling capacity of an air conditioner – higher BTU ratings will cool larger spaces more effectively.

Our next several sections will go over the basic steps for installation, which should also be found on the manual for any window AC unit you purchase.

Mounting

The first big step for installation is mounting the unit. This usually requires a bit of assembly beforehand, but nothing too complicated. The main goal here is to get the unit into place securely and make sure it’s level.

With your bottom window sash moved up as far as it can possibly go, you’ll usually have a bottom sash lock that can be removed so the unit can fit. You’ll also likely have side curtains that come with your window AC unit – these should be attached to both sides of the unit and expand outward to fill in the gaps on each side. Simply slide the flange on the bottom of the case against the windowsill, then lower the bottom sash until it’s created a seal.

Securing and Balancing

Next, you’ll need to ensure that the unit is completely secure and balanced. Use screws to hold it in place, and make sure everything is tight and flush against the window.

Installing Side Panels

The side panels should be inserted into any gaps on either side of the unit. These are usually provided with your purchase, but if they’re missing you can use a piece of plywood or Plexiglas to fill in the gap instead.

When using screws, drill pilot holes first to keep the wood from splitting. For Plexiglas, use a silicone adhesive to secure it in place. Some window AC units may come with L-shaped clips that can be used to secure the side panels in place, but check your manual to be sure.

Outside Mounting Brackets?

Depending on the type of window and unit you have, you may need outside mounting brackets for additional support. These are usually provided with the unit and can be easily installed following the instructions.

One potential complication here is if the window in question is on a second story or higher. In these cases, you may need a ladder and some assistance to safely install the brackets.

Sealing Up Any Gaps

Finally, use foam weather stripping to seal up any remaining gaps between the unit and window. This will help with efficiency and prevent air from leaking in or out.

Plug In, Test Out

You’ve made it! Now is the time to plug in the unit and test it out. If everything is properly sealed and secured, your window AC unit should be up and running with cool air flowing in no time.
